TL;DR: Apple introduced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026 in Cupertino as its first foldable iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner display, 5.4-inch outer display, A20 Pro chip and a $1,999 starting price ahead of October pre-orders.

Apple positioned the device as its largest iPhone screen in a pocketable form, opening like a book and closing to a passport-like size for one-handed use.

First foldable arrives under new CEO

Apple introduced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026 at its Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California, according to Apple.

The company described the product as the first foldable iPhone and, when opened, the thinnest iPhone ever, according to Apple.

The launch was the first fall keynote under newly appointed Chief Executive John Ternus, according to TechCrunch. Ternus took over from Tim Cook at the start of the month, according to NPR.

Apple called its fall showcase the “Surprise and Shine” event, according to NPR. TechCrunch reported that the event also covered the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, Apple Watch updates, AirPods and health software, but Duo was presented as the central hardware introduction.

Ternus said the product preserved familiar iPhone expectations while adding a new folding design, according to NPR. Apple quoted Ternus calling Duo “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original,” according to Apple.

Apple said Duo was crafted from grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish and offered in two colors, star white and night sky, according to Apple. MacRumors likewise reported Star White and Night Sky as the two color options.

Two displays share one aspect ratio

Closed, iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display, according to Apple. Apple said that outer display provides 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro.

Opened, the device exposes a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display, according to Apple. Apple said the inner display is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Reuters described Duo as a passport-shaped device that opens into the 7.6-inch display and supports keeping two apps open at the same time.

MacRumors reported additional size comparisons attributed to Apple, including that the inner display is 80 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro, while the outer display offers 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro.

Both displays share the same aspect ratio so content scales proportionally between closed and open states, according to Apple. Apple said the continuity was intended to make the experience feel continuous whether Duo is open or closed.

Both displays feature ProMotion, Always On and 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness, according to Apple.

Apple said a premium nano-texture finish reduces glare and reflections and creates a matte surface that minimizes crease visibility, according to Apple. MacRumors reported that Apple also described a micro-lens texture made with maskless laser lithography that writes each lens pixel by pixel to create a perceptually flat matte surface.

Beneath the inner display, a new FaceTime camera stays hidden when not in use to keep the screen uninterrupted, according to Apple. TechCrunch described the inner camera as an “underdisplay” camera that gives an all-screen feel.

Apple said Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year for notes, sketching and document markup on either display, according to Apple. MacRumors reported that the Pencil support is coming to both displays later this year.

Hinge, titanium frame and durability design

Apple said Duo uses a precision hinge that supports the center of the display to hold it flat when opened, combined with an integrated magnet array for secure closure, according to Apple.

The hinge contains more than 100 components to control opening and closing and support the center of the display, according to Apple. MacRumors reported that Apple described the assembly as more than 100 tiny precision components.

Apple said internal support ribs reinforce the structure, while antenna splits with ceramic fiber inserts enhance frame rigidity, according to Apple.

The enclosure uses grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish and a 3D-printed hinge cover with a contrasting micro-blasted finish, according to Apple.

Ceramic Shield protects the back of Duo, while Ceramic Shield 2 on the front has three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation, according to Apple. MacRumors reported Ceramic Shield on the back, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and an IP68 rating.

Apple said Duo is splash-, water- and dust-resistant with an IP68 rating, according to Apple.

For the folding screen, Apple said a scratch-resistant coating and nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer offer up to 40 percent higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry, according to Apple.

Apple said high-strength glass sits above and below the folding display panel, with custom adhesives that let layers glide past one another like pages of a book to relieve bend stress, according to Apple. MacRumors described the same multilayer lamination approach with viscoelastic adhesives intended to prevent distortion over time.

MacRumors reported that a titanium plate forms the bottom layer and carbon-fiber support plates create a stiff base for the display.

Authentication uses Touch ID integrated into the side button for use open or closed, and Duo can also be unlocked with an Apple Watch, according to Apple. MacRumors reported the same Touch ID and Apple Watch unlocking arrangement.

A20 Pro, cooling and dual batteries

Duo is powered by the new A20 Pro chip, according to Apple. Reuters reported that the A20 Pro is built on a 2-nanometer process.

Apple said the chip is paired with a custom-designed vapor chamber and advanced thermal-management system, according to Apple. Reuters reported that Apple said the combination was designed to improve on-device AI performance and graphics.

MacRumors reported that Duo uses the same A20 Pro chip as iPhone 18 Pro and includes Apple’s new C2 modem.

Apple’s C2 modem is up to 50 percent faster than C1X, adds 5G mmWave support in the United States and uses up to 15 percent less battery, according to MacRumors. The same report said Apple attributes faster reconnection in weak coverage to AI algorithms.

MacRumors reported that Apple claims up to 35 percent higher sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.

Duo uses a dual-battery architecture, with one battery in each half operating together as a single battery, according to Apple and MacRumors.

Apple rates Duo for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display, according to TechCrunch and MacRumors.

Using both screens equally, Apple rates the device for up to 24 hours of battery life, according to MacRumors.

Fast charging reaches 50 percent in around 20 minutes, while five minutes of charging provides up to five hours of video playback on the outer display, according to MacRumors.

MacRumors reported that Duo is eSIM-only worldwide.

Cameras use folding form for new shooting modes

Duo uses a 48-megapixel Fusion main camera and a 48-megapixel Fusion ultrawide camera with 2x optical zoom, according to MacRumors and TechCrunch.

MacRumors reported that the ultrawide is the same ultrawide used in iPhone 18 Pro and that Duo supports Apple’s upgraded Photographic Styles.

Because the device can stand on its own, Apple said it enables time-lapse capture in 4K Dolby Vision HDR, according to MacRumors.

The outer display houses a 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera, while the inner display has a separate FaceTime camera hidden behind the screen, according to MacRumors.

MacRumors reported that the inner camera works fully open or propped on a surface, and that front and rear cameras can capture simultaneously.

Users can take rear-camera selfies while previewing the shot on the outer display, according to TechCrunch.

MacRumors reported a new Duo FaceTime feature that lets another person join a video call from the outer display.

A Smart Take feature tracks a scene and automatically captures the photo when everyone in a group shot is ready, removing the need for a timer, according to MacRumors. The same report said the outer display can play animations to hold a child’s attention during photos.

Apple said the folding design enables camera uses not possible on other iPhones, according to Apple.

Camera Control is included to launch the camera quickly, including a new Siri Camera mode in which Siri can use the camera view to answer questions and take action, according to Apple.

iOS 27 adapts layout to open, closed and half-folded use

Duo runs iOS 27, which Apple said was reimagined for folding use while remaining familiar and intuitive, according to Apple.

MacRumors reported that essential controls move toward the sides within thumb reach, the Home Screen dock is oriented vertically and the status bar was redesigned for the display corner.

Software transitions between outer and inner displays as the device opens, with controls remaining in a consistent position while content scales up, according to MacRumors.

iOS adapts to the angle at which Duo is held or propped and supports partially folded use, with content sliding away from the crease where taps are harder to register, according to MacRumors.

MacRumors reported custom audio tuning that adjusts for changing speaker distance as Duo is positioned.

Users can run two apps at once, open the same app twice, swipe up from the bottom to switch apps, or pair two apps to reopen them together later, according to MacRumors.

A new Standby mode adds widgets for music, calendar or weather and lets the device act as a bedside clock with a soft glow, according to MacRumors.

Apple said Duo includes Apple Intelligence 2 and Siri AI, bringing AI capabilities together with personal context, according to Apple.

NPR reported that Apple plans to make a beta version of iOS 27 public in October, including an AI-enabled Siri with access to contacts, calendar, messages, emails and apps.

NPR reported that Apple described future iPhones as “intelligent personal hubs,” with emphasis on on-device processing and private cloud processing when outside help is required.

Price, storage and planned release dates

Duo starts at $1,999 with 256GB of storage, with options extending to 2TB, according to MacRumors.

The BBC reported U.S. prices starting at $1,999 and rising to $3,200 depending on configuration. The BBC also reported a United Kingdom starting price of at least £1,999.

By comparison, Apple also announced iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199 and iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at $1,299, according to TechCrunch and the BBC. NPR calculated that Duo starts $700 higher than the entry-level iPhone 18 Pro.

Pre-orders for Duo begin Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23, according to Apple. MacRumors and TechCrunch reported the same October 16 preorder and October 23 in-store dates.

Those dates were future events as of September 11, 2026, not completed sales.

The BBC reported that Apple entered folding phones later than Samsung and Huawei, whose folding products date to 2019, according to NPR.

The BBC cited IDC EMEA analyst Francisco Jeronimo on competition in China and CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood on the timing of Ternus’s promotion around a major iPhone launch. NPR cited analyst Jason Snell estimating foldables at about 2 percent of global smartphone sales and questioning how broadly a premium folding form will appeal.
